About the Freixo / Tongobriga Archaeological Site

The ruins of the Roman city of Tongobriga, in Marco de Canaveses, are spread over about 15 hectares of land that has been classified as a National Monument since 1986.

Erected between the end of the 1st century and the beginning of the 2nd century, the city was built over an important “castro” (hillfort), during the start the Roman occupation in this region.

About the Archaeological Site

Tongobriga was discovered in the 80s and since the first excavations it has been possible to identify Castro and Roman residential areas, a wall, a forum, a pre-Roman baths and Roman baths and a Necropolis, which attests to the importance of this location, which even grew to became a civitas.

It is known that it remained prominent even beyond the fall of the Empire, as confirmed by the 5th century Palaeochristian basilica.

Archaeological Work

There is, however, still much to discover in Tongobriga. The excavations continue and the importance of the site has completely changed the life of the small village of Freixo, which still hosts the Professional School of Archaeology, which, besides training new professionals, allows for the continuation of archaeological work.
